National & Ohio Supporters of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Programs · The American College of Emergency Physicians' Guidelines recommend that communities establish programs supervised by physicians (as in emergency department settings) but performed by personnel specially trained in forensic evidence collection and care for patients who have been sexually assaulted. · The Emergency Nurses Association position is that, “ideally, the comprehensive care of (sexual assault) survivors should be given and coordinated by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners”. · The American Nurses Association has recognized forensic nursing as a formal discipline in nursing (the terms “forensic nurse” and “Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner” are synonymous). · The United States Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime reported in 1996 that the use of trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners can reduce costs and enhance the provision of services for sexual assault victims. · The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification has expressed support for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners as a key in improving their ability to conduct sexual crime investigations. · The Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, and Ohio Attorney General's Office have supported a statewide initiative to increase the use of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
